Did you know that those little stickers on the side of your fruit are totally edible?
Apples, oranges, bananas, nectarines and avocado have all come with stickers marking UPC #’s and their country origin. For years the FDA has required all fruit sold domestically to have these little stickers applied and that means for years people have been accidently eating them.
Here are a few facts I would like to share with you about fruit stickers.
#1 – The glue to apply the sticker is completely food grade. Meaning that we can use pressure sensitive adhesives that have been FDA approved and can safely be used as the food-contact surface of labels and/or tapes applied to food. So it’s not harmful if you accidently ingest one of these tiny labels.
#2 – Ever have trouble trying to remove one of those pesky little labels? Try sticking a piece of scotch tape over it and it should come right off!
#3 – The numbers on the stickers have more meaning than just a UPC.
- If there are only four numbers in the PLU, this means that the produce was grown conventionally or “traditionally” with the use of pesticides.
- If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “8″, this tells you that the item is a genetically modified fruit or vegetable.
- If there are five numbers in the PLU code, and the number starts with “9″, this tells you that the produce was grown organically and is not genetically modified
