hashtag-blog

Far too many people and companies misuse the hashtag, unaware of its actual purposes and potential. Here are some tips to get the most out of hashtags- and your social media strategy.

The hashtag.

What sparked with Twitter has now become omnipresent. Facebook, Pinterest, Google +, and virtually all social media platforms allow for users to archive topics of relevance or popularity with the marker.

  1. Choose the Right ‘Key’ Words

Hashtags are the SEO of social media management- if you choose words smartly, or center your products or services around particular themes, you not only attract more potential consumers, you also get your followers to begin considering you in different ways. For example, a contractor who specializes in basement finishing could feature a Twitter post on a current packaged deal a couple of months before the Superbowl, include a post to a picture of a previous client’s finished basement who later set-up a home theater, and boast #HomeTheater. Users then follow the hashtag only to access thousands of photographic and videographic posts on home theater systems.

Now your prospects might have a reason to reconsider finishing their basements. And it does not even have to be explicit- the hashtag is simply there as a modest call-to-action.

  1. Ensure Continuity

Ensure your leads across all digital and social avenues are presented with the same messages. If you post the above on Twitter, do so similarly on Google + or Facebook. Integrated marketing is Multi-Channeled.

  1. The Hashtag Must Make Sense

Before you even choose a hashtag or post anything, you should research potential keywords. Social media is inherently organic, and what #foreveryoung meant on Tuesday could have taken on a wholly different trend on Friday. Search your keywords in your social media platforms before making a choice.

Social media hashtags are not as critical as SEO on regular web-pages, but if used smartly, they can have huge impact on your social media ROI. Want to know more? We would love to speak with you.
